A WORD FOR THIS SEASON

You’re probably feeling like they hear you but they just don’t listen. The whining is wearing you down, and the sibling fights seem to start the second you sit down.

From 4 to 7, kids are testing their independence and learning how the world works. Listening, whining, fighting, and even little lies are a normal part of that growth.

I’m a mom of six, ages 7 to 23. Slowing down usually gets further than getting louder.

Disciple as much as possible. Discipline as often as necessary. These years are a gift for building habits of the heart. Deuteronomy 6:7 calls us to talk about God’s ways when we sit at home and walk along the road, so the everyday moments count.

A TOOL FOR TONIGHT

Mend and restore after a sibling fight

Fights will happen. What you do after the fight is where the heart lesson lives. Try this tonight.

  1. 1Separate and calm. Sit them apart for a minute and say: We’ll talk when our bodies are calm.
  2. 2Hear each one. Ask: What happened? and What were you feeling? Let each child finish without interrupting.
  3. 3Name the choice, not the child: Grabbing and yelling are not how we treat each other in our family.
  4. 4Make it right. Each child says: I’m sorry for ___. Will you forgive me? The other answers: I forgive you.
  5. 5Restore. End with a hug or a high five and remind them: In our family, we give honor.
