Big feelings in a little body can ask a lot of you.

A WORD FOR THIS SEASON

You’re probably feeling like every ‘no’ turns into a meltdown. Some days you feel like a referee, a snack machine, and a punching bag before 9 a.m.

Tantrums, hitting, and not listening are very common from 1 to 3. Big feelings are showing up in a little body that doesn’t have the words yet.

I’m a mom of six, ages 7 to 23, and I know how big these little feelings can get. Your calm comes before their calm.

Does this sound like you?

  • “Every transition turns into a battle.”
  • “My toddler hits, and I don’t know what to do in the moment.”
  • “I say it ten times and nothing happens.”
  • “I’m stuck between being too harsh and being too soft.”

Not harsh, not permissive. You can be both kind and firm with this little one. Galatians 6:9 says, Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. The small, repeated moments are the harvest.

A TOOL FOR TONIGHT

Calm, connect, correct, mend

Use this the next time a meltdown or a hit happens. Keep your words few and your voice low.

  1. 1Calm first. Take one breath, get down to their eye level, and soften your face. Your calm becomes their calm.
  2. 2Connection second. Name the feeling: You’re so mad. You wanted that toy.
  3. 3Correction third. Hold the line in one short sentence: I won’t let you hit. Hands are for helping.
  4. 4Mend and restore. When they’re calm, hug them and say: I love you. We’re okay. Then help them make it right.

Inside the membership, you’ll find the full plan for tantrums, hitting, and listening, with age-by-age steps.
