Whining

Free help from Jess

That whiny voice is wearing you down, and you’ve caught yourself giving in just to make it stop.

What’s usually happening

Whining usually means your child is tired, hungry, bored, or has learned that whining works. They often don’t know another way to ask yet. We can teach them one.

Try this

  1. 1Check the basics first: snack, rest, or a few minutes of your attention.
  2. 2Show them what a regular voice sounds like, then have them try.
  3. 3Don’t give in to the whine, but say yes quickly to a kind ask when you can.

What to say

  • “I can’t understand that voice. Can you ask in your regular voice?”
  • “Try again, and I’ll listen.”
  • “The answer is still no, and I love you.”

Do everything without grumbling and arguing.
