Teens

Giving them room to grow doesn’t mean letting go of connection.

A WORD FOR THIS SEASON

You’re probably feeling them pull away, and it can feel like you’re losing them. The bedroom door is closed more often, and the phone always seems to win.

Teens need more room to grow, and some pulling away is normal. They still need you, even when they act like they don’t.

I’m a mom of six, ages 7 to 23. Listening more than lecturing, and connection before rules, opens doors.

Jess

Does this sound like you?

  • “I feel like I’m losing connection with my teen.”
  • “The phone is always between us.”
  • “I’m worried about whether their faith is really their own.”
  • “Every conversation turns into an argument.”

Giving them room to grow doesn’t mean letting go of connection. Philippians 1:6 promises that He who began a good work in them will carry it on to completion. God isn’t finished with your teen, and He isn’t finished with you.

A TOOL FOR TONIGHT

The open-door check-in

Do this once this week. Side by side works better than face to face with teens, so try the car, a walk, or a late-night snack.

  1. 1Put your own phone away first. Your attention is the message.
  2. 2Ask one real question and then wait: What’s been the hardest part of your week?
  3. 3Listen more than you lecture. If you want to correct something, save it for another day.
  4. 4Say it out loud: You know you can ask me anything. I’d rather be awkward than leave you alone in it.
  5. 5End with honor: name one thing you see God doing in them.

Inside the membership, you’ll find help for connection, phones, talking back, and walking with your teen as their faith becomes their own.
